2YOON Talks Dreams, Expectations, Foreign Attention and Online Comments
With many dreams and a greed to attempt new things, members Heo Gayoon and Jeon Jiyoon of 4Minute broke away from the group for a short time to return anew as 2YOON.
It wasn’t something that was decided on the spot. It’s a project and an album that took 2 years of preparation and maturation before being released. 2YOON unveiled a 180° change of 4Minute’s original colour. Walking on unfamiliar grounds with the “Country Pop” style, 2YOON was born.
It’s reminiscent of Taylor Swift’s music but handled with a more distinctive sound and creative feel to it. 2YOON was recently praised and featured in an article by famous music magazine Spin, “2YOON reinterpreted country.” The duo attracted a lot of attention for actively taking part in the album’s visual concept from their hair and make-up to their outfits, showing off their multiple talents.
We sat down with 2YOON who have been conducting successful promotional activities with their title track “24/7.”
- Known as Ssangyoon, but debuted as 2YOON.
Gayoon, “We agreed on making our debut as Ssangyoon long ago. However, before the album jacket was printed, it was decided that we should change it. Ssangyoon was meaningful to us because we were used to fans calling us by that nickname. Our agency thought it would be misinterpreted because it sounds like a swear word, so we chose to listen to them.”
- After hearing the title track, everyone said it sounded refreshing and new.
Jiyoon, “We wanted to show what we weren’t able to show through 4Minute. It’s also different from Hyun Ah’s solo.We thought that while promoting as a sub-unit with a different appeal, it would in the end benefit 4Minute as well. Being the first idols to attempt country pop is meaningful. It reminded us of ‘Rather than the best, the only.’ “
- Praised by foreign medias.
Gayoon, “Spin complimented us by saying that “Taylor Swift lost the opportunity of using a Disney fantasy world to 2YOON.” It surprised us. Although country originates from the United States, it seems that they were able to rediscover it [through our song.]“
Taylor Swift must be kicking herself right now. [...] She missed out on the opportunity to treat her former genre’s real-Amurika imagery as the Disneyland fantasy that it can be.
- Highlight of the choreography “Runner’s Dance” looks quite tiring.
Gayoon, “I lost about 8kg because of it. It’s similar to physical training when you have to lift your knees up to your upper body and gradually accelerate the pace. It reminded me of PE classes during my senior year of high school, but this is even more exhausting to the point that I thought I would never be able to do it live and asked if we couldn’t perform it as a pre-recorded performance.”
- Because of the challenging choreography, I thought of not doing it live.
Gayoon, “When we are done performing 24/7, I go off stage and try to catch my breath as I have a hard time breathing. Even so, 2YOON’s performances are always and 100% live! Our agency said “It’s only natural that as 4Minute’s vocal line you two should sing live.”
Jiyoon, “During “Volume Up”‘s promotions, the question of singing the song live was raised but it was all live. [Because of the complexity of the song live] we even thought of lowering the key.”
- “Lovely Heo Gayoon, Tomboy Jeon Jiyoon.” I don’t hate my tomboy image.
Jiyoon, “My image has always been tomboyish. So we thought why not put more emphasis on it and make it stronger this time. Looking at the comments on the internet, some read ‘She looks so boyish. It seems that she would love girls more than boys.’ I would like it if there were no misunderstanding. I’m a woman who loves cooking too you know.”
- Stage outfits were very unique.
Jiyoon, “We put a lot of work in the stage outfits. Because we hate the obvious and wanted something creative. When we looked at Spring/Summer collections, we saw a lot of outfits with pants worn under a skirt. It reminded me of the training outfits we used to wear under skirts in high school.Since it looked like it was out from a comic and I love manhwas, we chose for it to be made. We got the inspiration for the tomboy concept from the recent fashion shows.”
- Heo Gayoon’s “Nano Ankles” and “Microfiber Legs” is a hot topic.
Gayoon, “I lost 8kg. To be honest, I think that I’ve tried every diet possible. But the most important thing is that I always ate what I wanted to eat whenever I wanted to. When you think of going on a diet, everything related to food becomes an obsession. After 6PM, I ask myself what should I eat. Most of the time I also eat food that I don’t particularly like.”
- When the album came out, people said that I got prettier. I was even under suspicion of having had plastic surgery.
Gayoon, “Humans are evolved from animals” haha. Quite frankly when I saw myself on our debut pictures I hated looking at them. After that I lost a lot of weight so my face looked different. Among all the diets I have tried, the chicken breasts and sweet potatoes diet seems to be the one that work for me and matched me the most. I don’t recommend diets containing enzymes because it would only make you feel hungrier.”
- You are famous for your “flawless skin” even with close-up selcas.
Jiyoon, “I have a lot of interest in make-up. I look at the products’ description first and when my skin starts to become troubled I use a moisturising concealer to cover the flaws. If it’s too dry, the skin won’t absorb it well. I especially love Nature Republic and Innisfree’s concealers. Regarding BB Creams, there’s no need for something expensive. Olive Young’s cosmetics in particular match my skin well. I love to shop at Dongdaemun for jeans. For eyeliners, I use Bobby Brown’s. I don’t use liquid eyeliners. Instead I prefer using dry eyeliners because I get the feeling that it won’t slide off and that it will last for a long time. Preferably dark colours. So it can last long. The cheaper it is, the less you’ll be satisfied with a product’s quality.”
- If I could use these skills to earn a living..
Gayoon, “Since I suggested ideas for a picturial before, I thought “now let’s show what I’m capable of through this.” Our clothing sponsorship offers increased a lot. My older brother graduated from a fashion design department. Launching a brand together, or running a brand shop is something I’d love to do.”
Jiyoon, “One of my dreams was to run an hotel. Because I loved staying at home. I love it so much that I’d love to be in charge of model houses.I love interior design so whenever I visit a beautiful house my heart would beat hard.”
